Nomadix Raises Awareness for Environmental Change with Hobie’s Fragile Ocean

Introducing Ships Sailed, the newest collaboration between Nomadix & Fragile Ocean

One of the most storied retail surf shops in Orange County has partnered with a San Clemente-based Social Purpose Corporation that manufactures The Only Towel You Need® to raise awareness for environmental change by way of a new towel, dubbed Ships Sailed.

Hobie Surf Shops’ earliest days go back to the summer of 1950 when Hobie Alter began shaping surfboards in his family’s Laguna Beach summer home. What started by shaping boards ended up shaping a culture. After four years in the family garage, Alter opened up Southern California's first surf shop in Dana Point, two blocks from where the current Hobie Surf Shop stands.

Today, Hobie Surfboards and Hobie Surf Shops continue to innovate and experiment, not only in board design and manufacturing but also in their desire to always remain conscious of their impact on the environment. This led to the creation of the Fragile Ocean brand in 2004. The idea behind Fragile Ocean was to be an awareness brand for Hobie, to remind people to be conscious of their actions on the oceans. Then, in 2019, the new brand joined 1% For The Planet, an international organization whose members contribute at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental causes.

Jack Schwaner, the managing partner at Hobie Surf Shops, had caught wind of Nomadix back in 2016, praising the brand’s ethos, noting that it matched what Hobie Surf Shops was all about. Nomadix towels are made from post-consumer recycled materials, are never dyed, and because they are built to be quick dry and resist bacteria, they don’t need to be washed as often, preserving our water.

“You talk about simplicity, you talk about sustainability, you started building sustainable products because that is what we stand for at Hobie's and Fragile Ocean,” Schwaner said. With Nomadix towels available at Hobie's, the partnership continued, collaborating on the production of Ships Sailed, an ode to one of their creators, A.T.S.

This towel, much like the others that Nomadix has made, is made from post-consumer recycled materials and gives back to the planet through both brands’ partnerships with 1% For The Planet. The towel is available online at Hobie Surf Shop and their stores in Orange County.
